Recording Your Family History
Do you know where you came from? Maybe you look like your great grandmother or you have traits like your great grandfather. How will you know if you don’t go back and research your history? Many people are taking a greater interest in discovering their family history than ever before. With all the technological advances we have today, it is easier than ever to learn about our ancestry and create a family history.
Building you family history sounds like an overwhelming task, but it doesn’t have to be. You don’t have to get it all done at once. Break it up into small tasks and you will find that little discoveries will lead to larger one.
The first place to start is with your immediate family. Create a Family Tree or pedigree chart with yourself at the beginning. Work backwards, adding parents, grandparents, etc. Make sure you add birth and death dates as well as marriage dates if you have them. Talk to family members to find out if there is a family bible or other Genealogy Records that you can look at. There are also many online resources to help you trace your ancestry and build your pedigree chart. The Family Search website has vast resources to help you locate your history. This is one of the most complete family history online libraries you will find and it can be a valuable help to your search.
Once you have built your pedigree chart back about three to four generations, start gathering information on each person. Having a personal history for someone makes them real. It doesn’t matter if the history you create is one page or ten. Just knowing something about the person behind the name is what is important. If possible, include pictures as well.
Some of the things that are nice to have in a history are the important dates and events. But also include everyday things if you can find them. Perhaps your ancestor had a diary or journal where they recorded their average day. This type of thing makes them human and helps their descendants relate to them on a more familiar level. It is also good to note places they lived. If they spend most of their life in an area close to where you live, you can take your family to see the areas they lived and worked. This also helps to make a connection with your ancestors.
Creating a family history doesn’t need to be a daunting task. Work on it a little at a time and soon you will develop a love for your ancestors and you will want to learn more. You can have a better picture of where you are going if you know where you have been.
