Genealogy DNA Testing: The Process and the Purpose
DNA testing processes are being increasingly adopted by mankind for various purposes, including unraveling parental lineage, and detecting and curing life threatening diseases. The most fascinating amongst these is the Genealogy DNA testing, which helps in identifying your age old ancestors, and even the age to which they belonged. Unraveling the secrets of your ancestry and parentage could prove to be an intriguing exercise.
DNA testing for genealogy is especially suitable for orphans or adopted children, who do not possess any knowledge pertaining to their lineage or parentage. Nowadays, there are specific databases set up, which bear the details of individuals who match your results, so that you can conduct your search within a specified focus group. Genealogy DNA testing has gradually emerged as a better process for tracking down relatives and blood relations in comparison to age old processes, such as scouring birth certificates, death certificates and marriage registries for the required information.
Genealogy DNA Testing: The Process
The process followed in DNA genealogy testing is quite simple too. Typically:
1. You need to provide some cells for testing, which are obtained from the inner layer of your cheek.
2. These are then dispatched to specific laboratories, where they are analyzed. Normally, these cells would bear combinations of numerous markers, which need to be studied together for establishing an apparent pattern. The range of markers could include mutations, which are present within the genome or could also be the presence and absence of short segments. These could be representative of genes that have been passed down from one generation to the other, without any apparent consequences like hereditary diseases or ailments. Therefore, studying a single marker is not enough to establish a genealogical pattern. One needs to study a combination of them, in order to establish a sequential similarity with the others in the database.
3. Once a specific pattern has been established, one can look for similarities.
The process of Genealogy DNA testing is quite to that used for criminal investigation. The basic principle followed by this process is that no two individuals are actually identical. Each of us is unique in our DNA fingerprinting. However, blood relatives might share common traits, which can help in identifying matches.
With genealogy testing becoming more and more common and popular these days, the cost of testing has also dropped to a few hundreds of dollars. This has also made it a much more affordable option and the rates are set to dip even further. Therefore, genealogy DNA testing has clearly emerged as one of the most interesting ways to gathering information on lineage and ancestry and is quite easy on the pockets as well.
